Introduction This Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) specification and the accompanying OHSAS 18002, Guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001, have developed in response to urgent customer demand for a recognizable occupational health and safety management system standard against which their management system can be assessed and certified.

  3. Introduction OHSAS 18001 has been developed to be compatible with the ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) Management system standards, in order to facilitate the integration of quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and safety management system by organizations.

  4. Scope This occupational Health and Safety Assessment series (OHSAS) specification gives requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH & S) management system, to enable an organization to control its OH&S risk and improve its performance.

  5. Scope This OHSAS specification is applicable to any organization that whishes to: 1. Establish an OH & S management system to eliminate or minimize risk to employees and other interested parties who maybe exposed to OH & S risk associated with its activities.

  6. Scope This OHSAS specification is applicable to any organization that whishes to: 2. Implement, maintain and continually improve and OH & S management system. 3. Assure itself of its conformance with its stated OH&S policy.

  10. Terms and Definitions ACCIDENT - Undesired event giving rise to death, ill health, injury, damage or other loss. Hazard - source or situation with potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill health, damage to property , damage to workplace environment or combination of this.

  11. Term and Definition Hazard Identification - process to recognizing that a hazard exist and defining its characteristic. Occupational Health & Safety - conditions & factors that affect the well-being of employees, temporary workers, contractual personnel, visitors and any person in the workplace.

Terms and Definition OH & S Management System - part of the overall management system that facilitates the management of the management of the OH%S risk associated with the business of the organization. This includes the organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the organization’s OH&S policy.

  13. Terms and Definitions Risk - combination of the likelihood and consequence's of a specified hazardous event occurring. Risk Assessment - overall process of estimating the magnitude of risk and deciding whether or not the risk is tolerable.

  14. Terms and Definition Safety - freedom from unacceptable risk of harm (ISO/IEC Guide 2). Tolerable Risk - risk that has been reduced to a level that can be endured by the organization having regard to its legal obligation and its own OH&S policy.
