  1. Israeli-Palestian Conflict

  2. Intifada First Intifada 1987-1993 Second Intifada 2000- Casualties Palestinians 1100 Israelis 164 Casualties Palestinians 5500 Israelis 1100

  3. Gaza War 2008-2009 • In response to Palestinian rocket launches, Israeli mounts an offensive in Gaza • Causalities: • Palestinians 1166 Israelis 13 • UN Report on War • Israel is found guilt of: • Targeting civilians • Bombing a mosque during prayers • Use of white phosphorus in civilian area • Palestine is found guilty of • Launching missiles into civilian areas

  4. Attempts at Peace Part 1 • Camp David Agreement between Israeli and Egypt 1978 • Brokered by US President Jimmy Carter • The Deal: • Egypt accepts Israeli’s right to exist • Israeli gives back the Sinai Peninsula • Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin win Nobel Peace prize • The Fallout: • Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is assassinated by Islamist Muslim Brotherhood

  5. Attempts at Peace 2 • Palestinian Liberation Organization which was dedicated to destroy Israel and win back their land formally recognizes Israel’s right to exist • Peace treaty brokered by US President Bill Clinton (1991) • The deal: • Mutual recognition • Limited self rule for Gaza Strip and West bank • The Fallout: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin assassinated in 1995 by Israeli extremist

  6. Attempts at Peace 3 • Since 2000 a gradual outline of a possible peace has emerged • Generally • Palestine would get Gaza and parts of the West Bank, including control of East Jerusalem • They would become a state • Israel would get to keep settlements they had established in West Bank • Obstacles: • Continued building of Israeli settlements in occupied territories • Terrorist attacks from extremist Palestinian groups on Israel

  7. Why it might not happen? Israel Palestine “Religious” parties do not want to give up any land to Palestinians Israel is a democracy but no party has ever won a majority Coalitions always need “religious” parties to rule Hamas a Islamist party controls Gaza strip-they refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist Militarily supplied by Iran and Hezbollah The moderate Fatah party support is limited to the West Bank

  8. Why it matters? • Seen as a symbol of Western indifference and lack of Arab/Islamic power • Many states do not yet recognize Israel’s right to exist • Iran, may be developing a nuclear weapon that it may well want to use on Israel • Many terrorist groups see this has a chance to wage, jihad so are willing to finance any group that is willing to attack Israel • For Osama Bin Laden and his group Al Qaeda the Israeli-Palestinian issue is the MAJOR grievance against the west
