  3. People, Climate, and Vegetation • Environments or a person’s surroundings influence where people live • People must adapt to all environments • examples of adaptation to the environments • Examples • Homes people build • Clothes people wear • Heaters and Air conditioning • Irrigation

Irrigation • Areas that are fairly dry must use this method to water crops • The deserts on earth are expanding because of irrigation practice among other things • The loss of fertile soil, farming land and forests is due to • The destruction of plant life • Over farming • Cutting down trees Desertification

  5. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s • Long Droughts, periods of dry weather • The fertile soil blew away in heavy winds • Many people relocated because of the Dust Bowl

  6. People, land, and water • People settle near water

  7. People on the move • Migration: the movement of people • Pull factors: conditions of other countries pull people to a new location • Push factors: unpleasant conditions push people to a better location.

  8. Migration within a country usually cause people from rural areas to move to urban areas • Urbanization is the movement from the countryside to cities • Large concentrations of people around cities create • metropolitan areas : the big city and the sprawling suburbs that surround them. • Demographers: • Study the effects of these movements and distributions
