Climate and Weather Climate is average weather
Biosphere • Anything that is alive lives in the biosphere • Interacts with all the other parts of the earth make the climate • Atmosphere (gases) • Cryosphere (frozen water) • Hydrosphere (liquid water) • Lithosphere (earth) • Example of interactions: • Volcano releases Soil into air (lithosphere) • Soil in air cools temperature (atmosphere) • Changes how much liquid water and frozen water (hydrosphere and cryosphere)
Causes of Climate • Sun Energy • Suns rays are called Solar Energy • Equator usually has the most because it has the most direct sun. The further you go north or south, the less energy you have so its colder • Oceans/Water • Water takes a long time to heat up and cool down. • So if you live next to a LARGE body of water, your temperature doesn’t change drastically. • Example of cities during the summer: Daytona: 90 high 78 low = 12 degrees Apopka: 94 high 74 low = 20 degrees Atlanta: 100 high 68 low = 32 degrees
Causes of Climate • Wind • Hot air rises and cold air sinks causing wind • This is called a convection current • In the U.S. , most of the winds come from the west and move to the east. • This means that water from the Atlantic ocean affects California, Washington, and Oregon a lot • The east coast ( North/South Carolina, New York, Massachusetts) water blows out to the ocean and doesn’t change the cities weather.
Causes Of Climate • Mountains • Warm air can hold a lot of water, cold air cannot • As air moves up, it cools • Mountains causes air to move up cooling it, which releases any water • West side of mountain is wet • East side of mountain is dry
