John 19. One of the most poignant songs we sing asks:. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh! Sometime it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?.

One of the most poignant songs we sing asks: Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh! Sometime it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
At least in part, let’s consider the penetrating question of that song: “Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” >Obviously, none of us were “there” physically. >And yet we sing about “Kneeling at the Cross” -and “beneath the Cross of Jesus’ -and “glorying in the Cross” -and “believing in the Cross” -and “living in the shadow of His Cross” -and “surveying the wondrous Cross” -and being “mended and whole” by the Cross. The Point? The Cross of Jesus is central not only to our songs of faith, but to our faith itself!
But have you ever stopped to consider who was there at the Cross? Think about it a moment, who was there? 1. Murderswere there,Matt.26:57-68; 27:1-2, 18-26 Pilate’s wife knew the truth!v.vv.19-20 Butthey chose Barabbas.vv.21-23 “blood be on us”v.25 > Acts 5:28 2.The Military was there,Matt.27:27-36 Was this “just duty” for them? Hardly! “scourged”v.26 “stripped Him”v.28 “crown of thrones”v.29a “kneeled down” - mocked,v.29b “spat on Him….beat Him on the head”v.30
But have you ever stopped to consider who was there at the Cross? Who else was there? 3.Mockerswere there,Matt.27:39-50 “hurling abuse”v.39 “He saved others…”vv.40-43 “see whether Elijah will come”v.49 4. Many Womenwere there,Matt.27:55 Gawking? No, “followed from Galilee, ministered to Him” “Woman was the first to sin and lead man to sin, but she was the last at the cross and the first at the empty tomb, and the first to bear the good news that Jesus had been raised from the dead.”H. Leo Boles
But have you ever stopped to consider who was there at the Cross? And? 5.Mother Mary was there!John 19:25-27 What a sight for a loving mother to behold! RememberLuke 2:8-19; 47-52. But this would not be the last time she saw her Son! This horrid image would not be the one that lingered, the one she carried to her grave!
So what’s the Point? A couple, actually: • We need to realize what we’re singing. • We need to know what we’re asking, claiming, and proclaiming when we sing about “The Cross of Jesus”. • And we need to stop and consider with whom we would have stood, if we had been there! -With theMurderersshouting “Crucify Him!” ? -With theMilitarystripping, spitting,& beating Him? -With theMockersridiculing and wagging you head? -Or with theMany Women, lamenting? -Or withmother Mary, caring and consoling her? • Singing is one thing….with whom would you stand?
I believe we can know what we would have done and with whom we would have stood. Where and with whom are you standing now? • Not just right this minute- but that’s important too. • Day to day, are you standing with those who love and serve Jesus? • Or those who mock and ridicule Him by their words and actions? Matthew 10:32-33
