WHAT IS GREEN CHEMISTRY? • Green chemistry is a new branch of chemistry that aims to develop procedures, especially industrial ones, so that they have a minimal impact on the environment, and help to prevent pollution.
12 PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY • Prevent Waste • Design safer chemicals • Find safer ways to make synthetic products • Maximise atom economy • Use safer solvents • Use renewable reactants • Maximise energy efficiency
12 PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY • Avoid chemical derivatives • Use catalysts where possible • Design biodegradable products • Use real-time analysis to prevent pollution • Minimise the potential for accidents
BHC COMPANY • The BHC company has developed a greener industrial synthesis of ibuprofen. • The process originally consisted of 6 steps and resulted in a significant amount of unwanted waste. • The BHC company has reduced the 6 steps to just 3 and results in minimal amounts.
HOW HAS THE COMPANY USED GREEN CHEMISTRY? • By using the 3 step process and producing less waste they have been maximising on atom economy. • Also by using the 3 step process they have been preventing waste. • BHC has found safer ways to make synthetic products.
BENEFITS TO THE COMPANY AND THE ENVIRONMENT • Producing less waste • Saving money • Produces larger quantities of ibuprofen • Takes less time
