Think - technician THE TECHNICIAN COUNCIL • PURPOSE of the Technician Council:- • to raise the status of technicians at work and in the community • develop an inclusive agreed framework for registration • create and maintain a common set of registration standards • strengthen the infrastructure that underpins the training of technicians • act as catalyst across science, engineering, ICT and health

Think - technician THE TECHNICIAN COUNCIL • TERMS OF REFERENCE – • facilitate initial drafting of registration standards • ensure appropriate support and information is available • drive forward the agenda of promoting professional status • facilitate dialogue between stakeholders • ensure regulatory bodies have appropriate QA systems • ensure maintenance of robust national registers

Think - technician THE TECHNICIAN COUNCIL • SCALE OF THE OPPORTUNITY - • in 2009, 181,367 employees registered with their professional body • in the same year, only 14089 technicians registered • in 2008, 277,926 people registered for a Level 3 engineering • course at a College of Further Education • So what happened to the other 263,837* people? What prevented • them from registering with their professional body? • * Clearly not the same year group – but the message still applies

Think - technician THE TECHNICIAN COUNCIL • FIRST STEPS – • identify requirements of each sector • build on existing professional registration standards • clarify meaning of ‘technician’ and reduce ambiguity • expand technician registers across the sectors • identify what would encourage technicians to register • examine how to provide those requirements
