Our Mission University Procurement supports Drexel University’s educational mission and administrative needs in accordance with the University's policies and procedures by assisting faculty and staff in obtaining timely, high quality products and services at low prices utilizing good business practices and professional ethics.
University’s Purchasing Philosophy • The University has a decentralized purchasing process that utilizes contracts for goods and services which strategically leverages the University’s buying power. • We strive to provide the necessary buying tools, training, and support to effectively, efficiently, and ethically purchase products and services.
What is Green/Sustainable Purchasing • Typically the purchase of products and services that • Uses renewable energy sources & recycled materials • Uses non-toxic materials • Protects and restores the earths natural resources • Is efficient and equitable • - NAEP
What is a Green/Sustainable Purchasing (cont’d) • Encourages evaluation of multiple environmental impacts of every product throughout its life cycle: • Raw materials acquisition • Production/manufacturing • Packaging/distribution • Use & operation • Maintenance • Disposal (recycling/remanufacturing) end-of-life • - NAEP

Green Thinking prior to 2008 • Utilized Philadelphia Area Collegiate Cooperative (PACC) to consolidate vendors and deliveries • PACC created a Green Committee to promote and incorporate Green/Sustainable buying practices • Promoted office equipment consolidation
Green Thinking (Cont’d) • Identified a vendor who could offer refurbished furniture options • Investigated and piloted recycled options • Partnered with Facilities to investigate opportunities for decreasing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency
2008 Green/Sustainability Goals • Develop mechanisms for increasing awareness and utilization of green/sustainable products • Market products or programs offered by preferred vendors/suppliers, supporting green/sustainable goals. • Create an opportunity to repurpose existing furniture/fixtures in storage
Develop mechanisms for increasing awareness and utilization of green/sustainable products • Met with major suppliers • What is your Sustainability Programs or Plans? • Review our buying habits – identify for us green/sustainable alternatives • Vendors with web-based purchasing systems made green alternatives easy to identify and access • Promote and Track our green purchases
Market products or programs offered by preferred vendors/suppliers, supporting green/sustainable goals • Procurement seminars • Workshops • Vendor Fairs • On Procurement’s website, adding a sustainable symbol next to vendors who offer green products/services.
Create an opportunity to repurpose existing furniture, fixtures, equipment (FFE) in storage • Partnered with vendors that provide refurbished furniture solutions • Provide a forum • to repurpose useful FFEs • to make resources no longer needed by departments available
Green thinking today! • University Procurement continues to develop relationships with vendors that utilize high quality remanufactured products to offer green/sustainable options to University community
Green Thinking Today (Cont’d) • University Procurement continues to work with departments to identify product/services that reduce carbon footprint • Work with vendors/departments to help support the responsible management of University waste
Success Stories • 25% of our Office Supply Purchases include recycled material. • Increasing the number of University hybrid vehicles • New lighting and ballast contract product has lowest mercury content on the market
Success Stories (Cont’d) • Airgas: trucks are equipped to reduce emissions • Deer Park Water: LEED certified processing plant • Denville Scientific Products, Inc.: recycled cardboard pipette tip holders • Parmetech, Inc: remanufactured Premium Compatible toner cartridges • AT&T: recycles all brands cell phones • DocuVault: recycles shredded materials
