School of Electronics Devi Ahilya University, Indore Presentation for Assessment, Semester I, 2008 Instructor Name: Dr. Abhay Kumar Course Name: (1) Digital Signal Processing (2) DSP Using MATLAB Course Code: MTES/MTSIT/MTMCT 15 Student Strength: 58 Aim of Course (I would like students to learn after attending the course) To understand basic theory of DSP & its algorithms. To comprehend finer concepts of algorithm design and its implementations. To visualize through experiments that DSP really works!
Assessment Policy & Result Summary Assessment Policy: Mid Term : 40% Final : 60% Poor Performance! – 50% students are below ‘B’
Assessment Comments on course contents, design, scope of course, adequacy etc., • Course Design as per leading US Universities. • Course Content matured upto design level. • This course is prerequisite to M.Tech SIT for MTSIT 25 (Digital Image Processing) • Many students with B.E.(Elex &Comm.) feel this course is a repeat.
Problems faced in Teaching-Learning • Coverage of syllabus is almost 70%. Major part left out is application aspect. Reasons thereof: • The class composition is heterogeneous - Students of all streams of Elex/CS/IT. That leads to slowing down of pace of coverage. • 50% students admitted through IInd counseling process which was delayed by one month. This caused loss of lectures for them. This is major reason for poor grade statistics.
Problems Continued…….. • Students attendance was mostly moderate- another reason for poor performance. • Students feedback about this course shall further provide insight into their poor performance. • Non availability of books – New books not purchased
My Suggestions for Course Changes & Improvement in Teaching-Learning Process • Separate course for different M.Tech. streams- Advanced DSP for M.Tech (ES). • Familiarity with DSP kits that department has bought. • Large size of class does not permit interactive teaching learning process - requirement of smaller class size. • Linkage of concepts taught with laboratory work. • Strict compliance of attendance norms
Steps taken for Improvement • Objectivity in paper setting- only numerical and problem oriented questions were asked in tests. • Major DSP concepts were demonstrated with MATLAB in lab hours. • Set of experiments were designed with prototype MATLAB code and given to students well in advance. • Personal interaction with students regarding suggestion of new small projects.
