  2. What is an exceptional student? Children that differ from the norm (below or above) Require an individualized program of special education Inclusive- learning and/or behavior problems, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, and intellectually gifted or have special talent.

  3. Useful Terms MMR- Mild Mental Retardation ADHD- Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder IEP- Individualized Education Program IDEA- Individuals with Disabilities Act

  4. Rights of Children with Disabilities Did not receive full right to equal education until mid-1970s. It was said that children with moderate to severe mental retardation “could not learn to read, write, and do arithmetic in the same manner that nondisabled students learned. Learning these academic skills is education, it was argues. Since they were not educable, they did not belong in schools.” (pg. 167)

ADA of 1990 • Americans with Disabilities Act, January 26, 1990 • Employers cannot discriminate against individuals with disabilities in hiring or promotion if they are otherwise qualified for the job. • Employers must provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. • New buses, bus, and train stations, and rail systems must be accessible to persons with disabilities. • Physical barriers in restaurants, hotel, retail stores, and stadiums must be removed. • Companies offering telephone services must also offer telephone relay services to those telecommunication devices for the deaf.
