Impact of Labeling • Advantages of Labeling • Federal/Local funding are based on specific learning disabilities. • Development of specialized teaching methods, assessment approaches, and behavioral interventions • Disadvantages of Labeling • General Education students might have negative attitude towards peer with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). • Labels shape teacher expectations.
Inclusion and Mainstream • Mainstream • Student is expected to keep up with classroom instruction with some accommodations allowed. • Student may benefit from being in a general education classroom both academically and socially. • Inclusion • Curriculum is often rewritten for students to pass assessments and gain confidence in their skills. • May receive one-on-one instruction.
Strategies and Techniques • Break assignments into smaller pieces • Breaks between assignments so student can refocus • Reward system for good behavior • Design lesson plans that can be modified to fit each student • Add creativity to lessons and homework • Develop and maintain a pool of mentors. • Use peers to review lesson plans and develop ideas
