Snowden Optional Requirements Grades 1 and 2 • Completed Application • Required to take Optional Schools’ admittance tests • Students tested for first grade must have minimum score of 80-percent mastery in February through April and 90-percent mastery in May through August. • Students tested for second grade must score at or above the 70th percentile in total reading AND total math on the admittance test. • Satisfactory process skills • Meet or exceed standards in academic and support subjects • Meet or exceed expectations in conduct on the most recent report card • Satisfactory attendance • A total of more than 15 absences, tardies to school or to class and/or early dismissals is considered unsatisfactory.

Snowden Optional Requirements Grades 3 through 8 • Must score at above the 70th percentile on the Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics subtests or equivalents on the TCAP or current nationally normed achievement test • No more than one C as a semester average in all subjects on latest comprehensive report card • Satisfactory grades in conduct, work habits, and attendance (including promptness to school) • Satisfactory progress in nonacademic subjects • Satisfactory attendance • A total of more than 15 absences, tardies to school or to class, and/or early dismissals is considered unsatisfactory.

Where Do I Go? • If you live in the Snowden District: • Parents of students who are in-district and qualify for our Optional Program need to complete the application and submit all proper documentation to Snowden School • Completed application • Copy of most recent report card • Copy of 2010 TCAP scores • Verification of address (3 proofs) • In-district parents do not need to go through the application process or the in-person application process at the Board of Education

  17. Where Do I Go? If you do not live in the Snowden district and want to apply online: • To submit an online application, the student must currently attend a Memphis City School in grades one through eleven. • Students attending Campus School or a charter school cannot apply online. • Parents of eligible students for the online application process can pick up a bar-coded “ticket” application January 24th from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm and January 25th from 7:30 am until 5:00 pm at the Board of Education. • If you have a bar-coded application, you can submit an application online by going to the Optional Schools website and it will provide you with a receipt. • If you complete the online application, you do not need to return to the Board of Education on January 28th. • In order to use the bar-coded application online, the online submission must occur prior to January 28th at 5:00 pm.

Where Do I Go? • If you do not live in the Snowden District • and want to apply in person: • You may submit an application in person if you do not have web access or you prefer not to submit an application online. • You must apply in person if you choose to have your child privately tested or use a test other than the 2010 TCAP Achievement Test results. • You must apply in person or by mail if your student is currently a non-Memphis City Schools student (i.e. county, private, independent or parochial), attends Campus School or a charter school. • 1. Pick up bar-coded application at the BOE January 24th from 6:30 am until 5:30 pm or January 25 – 27th 7:30 am -5:00 pm • 2. Bring completed application with all proper documentation to the BOE between 6:30 am and 5 pm. • 3. After January 28th, applications may be submitted to the Optional Office. However, bar-coded “ticket” applications may not be used after 5:00 pm on January 28th.

Applying by Mail Applications for Optional Schools with proper documentation attached may be mailed to: Division of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics Memphis City Schools Board of Education 2597 Avery Avenue, Room 106 Memphis, TN 38112 Applications received in the mail will be processed at the end of the work day. Bar-coded applications may be mailed but must be received by January 28th at 5:00 pm. Bar-coded applications will be processed in numerical order, with the last four digits of the bar code number holding your place in line.

Application Process Order Applications are processed on a first-come, first served basis using the following procedures: • Sibling Preference for Memphis City qualified students with siblings in the same Optional Program who are maintaining the Optional requirements. A sibling is a brother or sister who lives at the same address. • Memphis City qualified students • Optional students who currently reside in the county and are currently enrolled in Memphis City Schools • County qualified siblings • County qualified students • Tennessee qualified students • Out-of-state qualified students
