Day 5 Bell StART Ceramics Write in Your Sketch Book: • COILS - Rope like pieces of clay. • SLAB - Clay which has been made flat by rolling. **Hand-in your sketch book today, I will expect to see your vocabulary terms (printed-out) and a preparatory drawing of a pinch bowl with “feet”.
This week’s goal: Use your sketch of the pinch pot w/feet and transfer into clay that will safely fire in the kiln. 1. Remember to form the clay no thicker than your thumb. 2. Add your clay pieces by scoring and slipping both surfaces. 3. Keep your clay body dry enough but still damp enough to be joined to other pieces or carved without distortion, this state is called leatherhard
Day 6 Bell StART Ceramics Work on your pinch-pot with feet, No bell work/sketch book logging.
Day 7 Bell StART Ceramics Write in Your Sketch Book: • LEATHER HARD- Refers to clay that is dry enough but still damp enough to be joined to other pieces or carved without distortion. Clay at this state resembles leather. Hard to bend and soft enough to be carved. When you have written the term and definition in your sketch book, put your SKB in your cubby then continue to work on your pinch pot sculpture.
Day 8 Bell StART Ceramics Write in Your Sketch Book: • BONE DRY - Refers to clay which is ready to be fired. All the moisture is gone from the clay. Clay is VERY FRAGILE at this stage. ***Make sure you store your clay with enough moisture for the 3 day week end.
