OpenURL and Linking in Libraries:Distributed AND REIntegrated Information Systems Eric Hellman Founder, President Openly Informatics ,Inc. Bloomfield, New Jersey
Outline • What is OpenURL? • What is a Link Server? • Demo and Technology Discussion
What is OpenURL??? OpenURL is an internet equivalent of the index card in the (paper-based) card catalog • Packages bibliographic data • Can be presented to internet services • NISO Standard
What is a Link-Server??? A Link-Server is an internet equivalent of a help desk in the (paper-based) library • Present it with bibliographic data or a query • It helps you locate the best information in the library • Standards-based - many product options; • 1Cate, SFX, LinkFinderPlus, ArticleLinker, LinkSource, LinkSolver… • now widely deployed >1,000 libraries
An internet library is built by librarians usingelectronic resources from many vendors ISI PubMed Journal Publishers Full text DBs EBSCO OPAC A&I service Google Scholar
Some services offer links to a few resources ISI PubMed Journal Publishers Full text DBs EBSCO OPAC A&I service Google Scholar User
Other services offer links to different resources ISI PubMed Journal Publishers Full text DBs EBSCO User OPAC A&I service Google Scholar
Linking is inconsistent and hard to manage ISI PubMed Journal Publishers EBSCO Full text DBs OPAC A&I service Google Scholar
Users are confused • Who is EBSCO? • What is a DOI? • Why doesn't my bookmark work?
A link server introduces consistent andcomprehensive linking throughout the library ISI PubMed Journal Publisher 1Cate Full text DBs EBSCO OPAC A&I service Google Scholar
Users see a Library, not a bunch of databases and a linking brand ISI ingenta Journal Publishers 1Cate EBSCO The Library Full text DBs A&I service Google OPAC User
How URL’s fail target • User's library doesn't subscribe to target • target authenticates by IP, user is off campus • User's library gets target item in a full-text aggregation • User's library has a locally hosted copy of target journal • User's country has a nationally hosted copy of target journal • target has moved its content without telling source • target has become a porn site This is known as the "Appropriate Copy Problem" URL source User
The link server lets the library fix these problems and determine which copy is appropriate ISI Pay per view $$$ ingenta A Journal Publishers Library subscribes Full text DBs EBSCO A OPAC A&I service Google User
