Sixth section Questions? Tylers@stanford.edu
Pidgins • What are they?
Pidgins • Who speaks a language other than English?
Pidgin definition • Pidgins: A pidgin is a language that arises to facilitate communication between people who don't speak the same language (so it's used as a lingua franca in an area). • It's got a simplified grammar • It is a mixture of several languages. • Note that it is no one's native language.
Creoles • If kids grow up speaking a pidgin, they’ll turn it into a creole. • What happens then?

Back to AAVE • What does this stuff about pidgins and creoles have to do with AAVE?
The origins of AAVE • There are two main hypotheses about AAVE’s origins: • The “Anglicist” or “dialect” hypothesis • The “creolist” hypothesis
Gullah • We saw a bunch of pictures of the South Carolina and Georgia Sea Islands and talked about Gullah, but how does it relate? • If our topic is linguistic origins, why did we keep looking at baskets and fishing nets?
