  1. Sixth Form Library Induction

  2. Welcome Essential information

  3. What does the library offer? • A quiet space for silent study • Lots of books • Magazines • National newspapers, kept on the table in the Outer Hall • 13 Computers and a black and white printer

  4. The Library code • Please work in silence • No eating or drinking except water • Mobile phones are not to be used • Do not use the library as a shortcut to the other corridor

  5. Borrowing Rules • Sixth Formers can borrow up to five books at a time for up to two weeks. • If you need your books for longer you can renew them up to three times. • You will be sent an email reminder if your books are late. • Once your books are four weeks overdue you will receive a letter from your form tutor.

  6. If your books are still not returned you will receive detention. • Do not lend your friend your book! It is still your responsibility and if she loses it, you have to pay for it. • Don’t remove books from the library without having them issued to your card first.

  7. How to find a book in the library Using Eclipse and searching the shelves

  8. Searching Online • Our electronic catalogue Eclipse allows you to search all of the library’s resources. From your PC or the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) on the main desk you can: • Search the catalogue for books • View recommended websites • Read and write book reviews • A detailed guide to Eclipse is available on request in the library. • Demonstration

  9. Searching the shelves • Fiction books (novels) are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s surname. • Non fiction books (fact and reference) are arranged on the shelves in number order. • The books are grouped into broad subject areas e.g. Sciences 500 – 599.

  10. Within each broad area the numbers are broken down further into more specific subject areas e.g. Physics, 530 or Chemistry, 540. • All the books on the same subject should be found together on the shelves and books on similar or related subjects will be nearby. • For more information pick up a ‘How to find a book’ leaflet from the library.

  14. When you have found your book • Bring it to the main desk. Your swipe card is also your library card. You won’t be charged for borrowing books. • Your book will be issued and stamped with the due date on the inside.

  15. You will need your swipe card to renew a book. • When you want to return a book, leave it in one of the return boxes inside or outside the library. Or give it directly to Miss Murphy.

  16. What could possibly go wrong?! • If you can’t find the book you are looking for in Eclipse, it might mean you have spelt your search term incorrectly. Make sure it is spelt right and try again. • If you have spelt your search terms correctly and it still doesn’t appear it means we don’t have that particular book in the library. Ask Miss Murphy and she may be able to order it for you.

  17. Sometimes a book you want may be listed as available but you can’t find it on the shelves where its supposed to be. What’s going on? • It has probably been picked up and put back in the wrong place. Keep searching. Sometimes this can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack but most books turn up in the end!

  18. Reading lists Available in the Sixth Form Office

  19. Reading lists • There are reading lists in the Sixth Form Office. • These provide recommendations on background reading. • Check for a list for your subject. • If you want a book the library doesn’t have, ask for a request form from Miss Murphy.

  20. Further information

  21. Further information • There are ‘How to find a book’ leaflets in the library as well as a quick guide to Eclipse. • This PowerPoint can be under the Library heading of the Belvedere Academy website. • Today you will all receive a ‘Study Skills’ reading list and a ‘How to find a book’ leaflet.
