Journal Entry: November 25 • Using a periodic table, predict the charge ion each of the following elements form: • calcium • fluorine • nitrogen • aluminum • Name the following ions: • Li+ • S-2 • Fe+3 • Br-
Writing Formulas for Binary Ionic Compounds Step #1: Write down ions and their charges. Step #2: Do the charges cancel? If yes, then that’s formulas. If no, then use “cross-over”. • Since compounds are neutral, the sum of the charges in an ion compound must be zero. • Examples: • calcium oxide • iron (III) chloride • barium nitride • aluminum sulfide
Naming Binary Ionic Compounds • Identify the cation and anion in the formula. • Name each ion: • For monatomic cations, the name of the ion is the name of the element. If the cation is polyvalent, include a Roman numeral in the name. • Monoatomic anionsare named by dropping ending of element and replacing with the suffix –ide.
Examples: • AlF3 • Mg3N2 • Cu2O
Wrapping It Up • Reflect on what you have learned concerning the today’s topic. • Respond to the following… • What are the three most important things you learned today? • What is one question you would still like answered? • What is the one way what you have learned connects with what you knew before?
