Overview • We have been investigating and developing game-based virtual worlds with possible homeland security applications since 2007. • Examples: • FabLab: A virtual world simulator for training technicians working in semiconductor or nanotechnology fabrication facilities in diagnosing spills and related conditions that involve benign/toxic materials • Demonstrates potential to develop and deploy low-cost simulators using modified commercial games and PC technologies • CyberWaterNet: A proposed virtual world environment for water scientists, water quality engineers and technicians, and public users (e.g., school kids) to monitor, analyze, and assess regional water quality • Relies on large, decentralized, multi-mode sensor network across water sources (including waste water) and water processing facilities in a regional watershed area • Monitoring and analyzing water quality for possible threats like pathogens, nano-particles, and pharmaceuticals • Citizens as First Responders: A proposed virtual world simulator and social networking portal to train and integrate public participants as effective non-professional responders to emerging incidents/crisis.
