  1. What led to the rise of the Populist Party in the U.S.?

  2. During the late 1800s, an overproduction of farm crops was causing farm crop prices to fall.

  3. To help solve this problem, farmers wanted the U.S. government to increase the money supply.

  4. Farmers supported free and unlimited coinage of silver(“free silver”) because they believed it would lead to higher prices for farm crops.

  5. The Populist Party was a political party that wanted reforms for farmers (such as “free silver”), leading to their rise in popularity by the 1890s. Populist Party Convention (1890)

  6. The Populist Party also supported economic and political reforms, such as the graduated income tax or thedirect election of U.S. Senators.

  7. Despite never winning a presidential election, the Populist Party was important for proposing ideas that later became laws in the U.S. William Jennings Bryan (Populist) Election of 1896 William McKinley 
