Last week - Lecture 4 • Networks and their advantages • Networks Types • Client and Server • The Internet • The Intranet & Extranet • Main uses of the Internet
Lecture 5 - Outline • Information Technology • Information Society • Using the IT in the daily life • A Good Working Environment
Information Technology • Definition of Information Technology (IT) • In early days, the term of Information Technology (IT) used to describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. • In the 1960s and 1970s, the term information technology (IT) was used by those who worked in places like banks and hospitals to describe the processes they used to store information. • Today, Information Technology (IT) defined as the use of computers, networking, software programming, and other equipment and processes to store, process, retrieve, transmit, and protect information.
Information Society • Definition of Information Society • The concept of the Information society refers to the fact that it is now very easy to link computers together and access information stored on other computers. • The Internet is a good example. By connecting to the Internet you gain access to millions of other computers that are connected around the world.
Using the IT in the daily life • Computers in the Home • Computers at Work • Computers in Education
Computers in the Home • Common uses for the computer within the home • Computer games • Home working • Home banking • Flights booking
Computers in the Home • Buying or selling goods(e-commerce). The phrase e-commerce is word that relates to buying or selling via the Internet. you can purchase directly via a Website by selecting the that you require and entering your credit card details. e.g. amazon website • e-Government is defined as the employment of the Internet for delivering government information and services to the citizens. e.g. opening a file at hospitals.
Computers at Work • Common uses for the computer at work • Computer Based Training (CBT) • Computer Based Training (CBT) offers a low cost solution to training needs where you need to train a large amount of people on a single subject. • These programs are normally supplied on CD-ROM and combine text, graphics and sound.
Computers at Work • Automated Production Systems • Many car factories are almost completely automated and the cars are assembled by computer-controlled robots. • This automation is becoming increasingly common throughout industry.
Computers at Work • Design Systems • Many products are designed using CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs to produce exact specifications and detailed drawings on the computer before producing models of new products.
Computers at Work • Accounts / Payroll • In most large organizations the accounts are maintained by a computerized system. • Due to the repetitive nature of accounts a computer system is ideally suited to this task and accuracy is guaranteed. • Stock Control • Stock control is ideal for automation and in many companies it is now completely computerized. • The stock control system keeps track of the number of items in stock and can automatically order replacement items when required.

Computers in Education • The modern mechanisms of communication such as networks, multimedia , electronic libraries as well as the Internet are all used during the academic term. • Aims of E-learning: • Covering the lack of qualified in the staff of teaching. • Giving the training more flexibility. • Achieving fairness in the training opportunity. • making education last. • Making the training cost effective.
A Good Working Environment • Understand what elements and practices can help create a good working environment. • Frequent breaks away from the computer • Provision of adequate lighting and ventilation. • Appropriate positioning of screens, chairs and keyboards (ergonomic).
