  1. Bishwa Ijtema(1st Phase) at Tongi, Dhaka 24 Jan – 26 Jan 2014

  2. The Congregation For forty-three years Tongi has been the chosen location, although similar programs are held on a lesser scale in other countries. The Ijtema is non-political, and therefore perhaps it draws people of all persuasion. Prayer is held for the spiritual adulation, exaltation and welfare of the Muslims community. Tungi

  3. The Congregation (Contd.) On the last day (Sunday, 26 January 14), is when the majority of pilgrims will make the walk to Tongi. Pilgrims will start walking around 21-22-23 Jan 2014, to reach Tongi. There will be estimated over 2 million pilgrims walking on almost all the main roads in Dhaka city and they will all be converging on Tongi. This is in addition to normal commuter traffic.

  4. Security Arrangements for Bishwa Ijtema • A three-tier security system including helicopter patrol and close-circuit television monitoring is set up in and around the Biswa Ijtema venue at Tongi • Adequate numbers of CCTV and Watch Towers are set up in and around the area . • Bomb disposal unit, dog squads and other vigilances will remain in the area. • Around 10,000 security personnel, including over 1,500 RAB members, forces from the Armed Police Battalion, Ansar, policemen and several hundred members of various intelligence agencies will be deployed. • Two helicopters would hover the sky and a huge number of forces will patrol the waterways by speedboats and engine boats.

  5. Points to Consider Limit your travel especially outside of Dhaka on the 23 - 26 Jan 2014. One should consider making alternate plans if you are taking holidays outside of Dhaka, including air travel. This is especially the case on 26 Jan 2014 when most of the pilgrims will be on the Airport Road. (From Gulshan or Baridhara it can take over 2 hrs to get to the airport even with a police escort.) The past 6 years, the road to the airport has been closed to traffic. Only Diplomatic vehicles under police escort, ambulances, etc. were allowed on Airport Road. All roads are going to get very congested with pilgrims walking towards Tongi. Other than the large numbers of pilgrims on the roadways of Dhaka city, the gathering remains peaceful.
