  2. Fundamental Precepts of Judaism • There is only 1 God • Life is holy • The Torah is a guide to correct living and is the word of God • Jews around the world share a common destiny and a responsibility to one another

  3. Dietary Laws (kosher) “You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk” No mixing milk with meat Cleanliness and the avoidance of unclean animals are crucial to keepingkosher

  4. Seafood must have fins and scales (salmon, tuna), yet not be a scavenger (catfish) Land animals must have cloven hooves, chew their cud, and be slaughtered in an especially prescribed humane manner Birds cannot be scavengers and also must be slaughtered in a special way

  5. Major Jewish Holidays • Rosh Hashanah: New Year celebrating the creation of the Earth… Hebrew calendar is lunar. • Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement. Jews repent for misdeeds through prayer and fasting for 24 hours. • Passover: honors the “exodus” of Jews from slavery in Egypt. Leavened bread is forbidden for the 8 days.
