  3. Do Now – 7 minutes • Write the lesson essential question (LEQ) and the high order thinking (HOT) questions in your spiral notebook on a blank sheet of paper. Include the proper heading. Silently read we you are finished. • LEQ – How does a writer’s purpose influence genre, structure, medium, and text elements? • HOT Qs - How do readers select a mentor author to imitate their style of writing? How do readers analyze a mentor text to identify their mentor author’s craft and style? How do readers utilize their mentor author and mentor text to create their own piece of literature?

  4. Writing Prompt – 10 minutes • In your spiral notebooks, respond to the following prompt using complete sentences, proper punctuation, and capitalization. Be sure to restate the question in your response. • Prompt: What does it mean to be a mentor? What are the qualities or attributes of an effective mentor? Describe your mentor or someone who you would like to be your mentor.

  7. Exploring Mentor Author Create the Ven Diagram graphic organizer on a blank sheet of paper. This graphic organizer is used to compare and contrast two things. Title graphic organizer “Mentor Author”. On the left side write your definition of a mentor author. On the right side I will provide you with another definition of mentor author. In the center, you will write the similarities between the two definitions. 3 minutes of independent work

  10. Exploring Mentor Text Create the Ven Diagram graphic organizer on a blank sheet of paper. This graphic organizer is used to compare and contrast two things. Title graphic organizer “Mentor Text”. On the left side write your definition of a mentor text. On the right side I will provide you with another definition of mentor text. In the center, you will write the similarities between the two definitions. 3 minutes of independent work
