Increase concept retention Offer application opportunities in exciting, new and interactive way Immediate feedback helps students recognize personal understanding and allows for adjustments in real-time Stimulate critical thinking skills Increase student engagement and motivation Why SMART Technology?
SMART Exchangeprovides thousands of premade lessons that can be adapted for our needs. Teachers Pay Teachers is an excellent site for both free and paid lessons. Scholastic News Magazineoffers lessons that meet standards in language arts, science and social studies. Resources I Like
Adapted Resources As I find lessons created by other teachers, I am modifying them to meet the needs of my learners and match standards I am teaching in my own classroom. • For example... • The calendar template created by Mrs. Fox was an excellent calendar resource I found on SMART Exchange, but had a few flaws. I was able to add graphics, lock some loose items and alter the original lesson to better match skills previously met by Bridges lessons. Images from the internet come in handy when lessons need a quick repair.
SMART Language Arts We integrated SMART Technology into language arts through input charts, vocabulary activities, interactive text, shared writing and informational videos.
Scholastic News: My Favorite SMART Board Find! • As an existing Scholastic News customer, I was missing out on this wonderful resource! This spring we used our SMART board to: • Learn new vocabulary • See video clips that extend our knowledge of the magazine topics • Complete interactive text activities as a whole group and then as a center activity
SMART Math • We love how our SMART board has enhanced our math learning!!! Skills we regularly practiced this spring include understanding place value, composing and decomposing numbers, counting coins, writing about money in 2 different ways, skip counting and adding/subtracting 10 and 100 mentally.
2.1 Numbers and Operations: Solve problems based on place value 2.1.1 Read and write numbers to 1,000 2.1.1 Compare numbers using <,=, > 2.1.3 Write numbers in expanded form 2.1.3 Add and subtract 10 and 100 mentally 2.1.3 Compose and decompose numbers to 1,000 2.1.4 Understand place value to 1,000 2.1.4 Use equivalent place value representations Focus Area: Place Value
Working toward our benchmark... New CCSM standards require second graders to have solid place value understanding up to 1,000. This jump was successfully achieved and maintained in my classroom in various ways, including interactive SMART board activities. Students continued to be engaged in place value learning due to their desire to use the SMART technology available as a center in our classroom during Math Workshop.

Student Survey I conducted a brief student exit survey in June to evaluate how my students felt about learning with technology.
My students have a broad range of favorite subjects, representing an average class of students in 2nd grade. My students are social learners, preferring to learn with someone or in a group (87%). Over 50% report learning best by “doing”. Over 60% of my students report learning with technology as their favorite modality. What I Learned...
In their words... • It makes learning fun! (Bruce) • Why you say? Well it usually gives you some hints, so it helps. (Gabi) • It helps me learn and succeed. I'm not a good listener and I could try it and it kind of helps me. (Mackenzie) • I think it helps because it can give you clues and make you smart. (Carly) • You do not have to use time drawing and writing things. On technology it shows you... It entertains you more. (Fateh) • Because you learn as you go and it feeds your brain. (Halle)
A wireless keyboard makes this tool much easier to use from anywhere in the room. Use what others create and modify it for your needs. Why reinvent the wheel? Don't forget to try out lessons created by others before implementing them in the classroom. Many links don't work and some creators don't lock down all the things you'd want locked down. Let your students help you! Kids today are very technologically savvy. Learn together! Tips & Tricks
Continue to use existing resources to locate premade lessons to enhance my teaching Set up classroom procedures in the fall to support SMART board learning across the content areas and to enhance classroom management Create activities and games with students to increase ownership and keep the technology exciting Make SMART learning part of our daily routine Looking Forward
