  2. Athens has grown very powerful. Sparta will not tolerate Athens dominating Greece Peloponnesia

  3. Sparta declares war on Athens.

  4. Sparta marches north to Athens.

  5. The Spartans surround the city state of Athens.

  6. Come out and fight ! They didn’t

  7. If we stay inside the city walls, maybe the Spartans will go away! Does that sound like Sparta????

  8. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  9. They didn’t go away. Instead…..

  10. Sparta burned the fields – if they have no food they will surrender!

  11. Great idea – starvin Athenians!

  13. Disease swept through Athens killing thousands.

  14. Sparta went home.

  15. Athens at it Again! They attack Sicily. Sicily is an ally of ---- yup, SPARTA! VIDEO

  16. Sparta destroys the Athenian army. Anyone who survived is a prisoner. Sicily destroys the Athenian navy. No one left to defend the city state of Athens……..

  17. Sparta attacks Athens. Athens fights bravely. The food supply is cut off again, Athens is starving and surrounded. They surrender. VIDEO

  18. The Peloponnesian War is over ----Sparta wins!!! But at what cost?

  19. Sparta was in control, but eventually city-states get resentful and attack Sparta. Greece is weakened by constant war between city-states. Ripe for outside invasion. Philip II of Macedonia ------- attacks Athens with his very powerful army.

  20. They fought as a phalanx (FAY-langks) which was a group of soldiers who stood close in a square. As one was killed, another took his place. They had very long spears.

  21. Peloponnesian War How did it start? Siege begins Disease sweeps Athens Truce Athens at it again! Result • Athens became more powerful due to Delian League • Used taxes to build the Parthenon • Built a wall to protect port • Sparta burned fields and blocked supplies • Athens still had access to port • Thousands die in Athens, including Pericles • 10 years of fighting, no one wins, Sparta goes home • Attacks Sicily, Sparta defends (with help from Persia), Athens defeated • Sparta Wins! • Fighting weakened the region, city states resent Sparta, vulnerable • Lurker berserkers are waiting, waiting, waiting ----- Phillip II of Macedonia invades with his powerful army
