Date: 8/18 &19 Lesson Title: Hypothesis & IV/DV DO NOW ACTIVITY (D.N.A) • 1.) What is the difference between Observation & Inference? What is the difference between a Qualitative & Quantitative Observation? • 2.) What must every good scientific question have (3 things)?
Information you gather using your five senses Factual information that describes something Key Term #1: Observation
An INFERENCE is an assumption or a prediction made from observations Key Term #2: INFERENCE
... ARE MEASURABLE OR COUNTABLE Key Term #3:Quantitative Observation
Describable not measurable Key Term #4:Qualitative Observation
1.) Testable 2.) Measurable 3.) Show a cause and effect relationship between two variables What must all scientific questions have? WHY questions areNOT GOOD!

Date: 8/16 & 17 Lesson Title: Hypothesis & IV/DV DO NOW ACTIVITY (D.N.A) • 1.) The picture on the left is a picture of a crime scene after “snowy” was killed. What are some observations that you can make from this crime scene (list at least 3)? • 2.) Based on those • observations, who • killed snowy/how • did snowy die?
What did you do in the D.N.A by letting us know how Snowy died?
MISSION • SWBATidentifyandformindependent anddependent variables in order to helpforma goodhypothesis • SWBATidentifyandformatestable hypothesisin order to develop a foundation in the scientific method
WHAT IS SCIENCE? Science is a system of knowledge and about the methods you use to find that knowledge. ...it begins with CURIOSITY and often ends with DISCOVERY
First you have to make an OBSERVATION... LETS LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE • Scientific Method • 1st - SCIENTIFIC QUESTION • 2nd - HYPOTHESIS • 3rd - EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN • 4th - COLLECT/RECORD DATA • 5th - ANALYZE DATA/CONCLUSION • Independent Variable • Dependent Variable
IV vs. DV • SWBATidentifyandformindependent anddependent variables in order to helpforma goodhypothesis • INDEPENDENT(IV) VS. DEPENDENT(DV)
VARIABLE • Variable: A factor that can change in an experiment. Every experiment has two – one is the cause, the other is the effect.
Wait.. what is a cause-effect relationship? • CAUSE --> What we think is making something happen (creating an EFFECT). • (EX: CAUSE = BABY) • EFFECT --> A change that is a result or consequence of the CAUSE. • (EX: EFFECT = Pasta Everywhere)

Experimental Title: Does the age a person gets married effect their chances of getting a divorce? IV- DV- Experimental Title: Does Fertilizer affect plant height? IV- DV- Experimental Title: Is there a relationship between the weather and student behavior? IV- DV-
SO WHAT IS A HYPOTHESIS REALLY? • An hypothesis is a proposed answer to a scientific question (an educated guess). • Scientist must do 2 things BEFOREforming a “Good” hypothesis: • Identify Independent & Dependent Variable • from the scientific question • Perform Background Research A hypothesis is written in the form of a STATEMENT, NOT A QUESTION!
HYPOTHESIS - NEXT STEP, Writing a Hypothesis • A Good Hypothesis must be... • A proposed answer/prediction to a question • Must show a cause-effect relationship with the independent dependent variable • Written in away that it can be tested • using If....(IV)...then (DV)....

Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction INDEPENDENT VARIABLE DEPENDENT VARIABLE Example: If plants get less sunlight then they will grow less.
Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Hypothesis: A Testable Prediction Example: If a person eats more fiber bars, then they will use the bathroom more regularly
