  2. What is a gerund? • Also known as present participle • Not the equivalent to the English gerund because Spanish gerund cannot be used as a noun as in English. • English gerund can be translated into Spanish as an infinitive. • In Spanish, the word always ends in –ndo.

  3. Forms • To form the gerund, remove the infinitive ending and add –ando for –ar verbs, and –iendo for –er and –ir verbs. -ar--->ando-er --->iendo-ir --->iendo caminar > caminando volver > volviendo abrir > abriendo

  4. Special cases • Verbs of the second and third conjugations where the stem of the word ends in a vowel, change the ending –iendo to –yendo. leer > leyendo caer > cayendo

  5. The gerund for iris yendo. • Third conjugatio verbs with stem changes: • o>ue>u • dormir, duermo, durmió dormir > durmiendo; morir > muriendo • e>ie>I • sentir, siento, sintiósentir > sintiendo • e>i>I • pedir, pido, pidió pedir > pidiendo

  6. Gerund verbs of motion seguir/continuar • Use seguir or continuar to express the idea “to continue” (to do something) or “to keep on (doing something)”. Sigo teniendo problemas con mi computadora. Continúan haciendo las mismas preguntas.
