  10. Cities • At Phnom Penh, two million inhabitants evacuated on foot at gunpoint. • As many as 20,000 died along the way.

  11. Killing Fields • Forced into slave labor • Soon began dying from overwork, malnutrition and disease. • Diet of one tin of rice per person every two days.

  12. Workdays • Workdays in the fields began around 4 a.m. and lasted until 10 p.m., • Only two rest periods allowed during the 18 hour day. • Every tenth day was a day of rest. Three days off during the Khmer New Year festival.

  13. Young People • Unsupervised gatherings of more than two persons were forbidden. • Young people placed in communals. • Later married in collective ceremonies involving hundreds of unwilling couples.

  14. Overall • Resulted in the deaths of 25 percent of the country's population from starvation, overwork and executions. • Two Million Deaths
