WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT? • The purpose of your thesis is to state the principal argument of your essay/paper • It tells your audience your position on a given topic • Generally, the thesis is the very last sentence in your introductory paragraph
WRITING A STRONG THESIS • A strong thesis is unified, precise, AND arguable • EXAMPLES: 1-Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel. 2-In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore. 3-Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain's Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave "civilized" society and go back to nature.

BODY PARAGRAPHS • Topic sentence: -must be specific and clearly state the purpose of the paragraph –must be connected to thesis • Quotes: -quotes must be STRONG and supportive of the points your are developing • Explanation/analysis of quote: -must be specific to the quote and explain HOW the quote supports your thesis
TIPS • Remember that the topic sentence, quotes, and analyses must support your thesis • Make sure you explain your quotes in detail! • If you are experiencing difficulties in coming up with a debatable thesis, try to create a question related to your topic and come up with an answer • Possible areas to focus on for your thesis: social issues, themes, author’s writing style, etc.
