WE HAVE TWO INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS – DO THEY OFFER THE SAME EDUCATION? • Course offerings are the same • Curricula are the same • Principal of EIS served as Assistant Principal at RIS • Principal of RIS served as Assistant Principal at EIS • Supervisors oversee teachers in both buildings • 23 current teachers have worked in both buildings during their careers • Extra-curricula offerings are the same • Clubs are offered in both schools

  5. Citizen Advisory Committees 2001, 2006 Recommendations: • Some special education and gifted programs offered only at EIS. • Magnet programs proposed at EIS. • Voluntary transfers offered • Transportation provided WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE?

  6. If nothing is done for next year, 290 sixth grade students will arrive at RIS’s door. WHY NOW?

  7. Goal: • To devise a plan to keep 6th grade enrollment at RIS in the vicinity of 250 for the next 5 years. • Guiding Principles • Keep neighborhoods together • Consider safety of students • Consider impact on families • Consider impact on RIS and EIS • Consider costs such as transportation and staffing • Comply with new state regulations for transportation HOW WAS THE DECISION MADE?

  8. New attendance zone • All 6th grade students • All newly registered 7th and 8th grade students • Transportation will be provided • Families who would have one student in RIS and one in EIS at the same time will have the option to keep both children in the same school WHAT IS THE PLAN? 1.

  9. Students who live outside the new attendance zone but more than two miles from both intermediate schools will be offered transportation only to EIS. These families may send their children to RIS;the district will only provide transportation to EIS. WHAT IS THE PLAN? 2.

  10. The Gifted Program and Special Education programs now only offered in EIS will remain in EIS. WHAT IS THE PLAN? 3.

  11. The Executive Union County Superintendent has reviewed Westfield’s plan for intermediate school enrollment • Meets New Jersey School District Accountability Regulations • Provides safe route to and from school DOES THE PLAN MEET STATE REQUIREMENTS?

  12. Optimal building usage • Comparable delivery of quality curriculum to both schools • Minimal disruption to families • Minimal staff increases • No additional busses required  WHAT DOES THE PLAN ACCOMPLISH?
