  1. Research SAE’s:How to get to the Agriscience Fair! What is an Agriscience Fair? How do I get started?

Agriscience Fair • Created by the National FFA Organization, using the same model as other science and engineering fairs. • Uses the scientific method to answer a question or solve a problem related to agriculture or the environment. • The CT Agriscience Fair is held in May and the National Agriscience Fair is held at the National FFA Convention in October. • Your finished product will be a written report and a poster. • There are lots of ideas and resources online!

To Get Started… Come up with an idea and fill out a proposal form! • An idea is a question; it is ok to use or modify someone else’s experiment. • Try searching for “science fair ideas related to ____” • www.sciencebuddies.com is an excellent resource! • Examples… • What effect does temperature have on cut flowers? • What type of dog treats do Labrador retrievers prefer? • Can a goldfish be trained to remember color? • How long does it take for different types of wood loose moisture?

  5. Once you have an idea, fill out the proposal form… Projects can be conducted individually or in groups of 2. 9th and 10th graders are judged in a separate division from 11th and 12th graders. You will have to get permission from a teacher to use school facilities, it may be best to pick something you can do at home! These categories have to do with special permissions you would need. Approximate.

  6. It is easiest to write your question as a cause/effect. For example, What effect does color have on Betta fish? Your hypothesis is one sentence describing what you think will happen. Give your project a creative title! Your procedure should be written in a very specific list of steps; it should be so specific that anyone could read them and follow your procedure exactly as you did it! You will have to collect data or observations, what information will you record and how will you keep track of it! Will you create a chart? Will you need to keep daily entries in a logbook?

  7. Find 2 reliable sources that can give you background information about your question or topic. Record the information so that you can cite it later! Think about it. This question is important, you must be able to explain why your experiment and results are valuable!

  8. Once you fill out the Proposal… • Have a teacher review it, to help you spot flaws in your design. • Then you can conduct your experiment! • Remember to document everything you can; pictures are best! Have someone help you so that you are in the pictures. • In order to enter the Agriscience Fair you will need submit a Written Report and Poster. • See more info in the Agriscience Fair Handbook, accessible at www.ffa.org
