Organization OptimizationIf you don’t stay organized, you may not succeed! • Continually re-plan. Nothing goes according to plan, so adjust as needed. • Integrate and prioritize. • Build a whole team and a whole vehicle. • Strive for resiliency, fluidity and redundancy. • Enable quick, effective communication. • Be scientific; do metrics, test and confirm. • Create an aura of being an established, successful team. Organization Structure and Style • A “bosses” and “workers” structure is simple and straight-forward. It works. • If you can "team" and get the work done, you are much better off. • An informal style may be best in a college environment. • Focus on the structure of the team and the leadership; the rest will follow. • Adapt and be flexible in organization structure and style. • Leverage what you do well through a fluid structure. • Don’t be stiff. Do what works. • Getting it done is more important than how it gets done. How to Organize a CDS Project
Team LeadCharacterize an ideal team lead • A team lead needs to be the best communicator, enabler and facilitator, not the best designer or builder. • A team lead's function is to support the team, not "run" things. • A good team lead respects and motivates people. • Isn’t overly sensitive. Keeps ego off the table. • Is frank, but speaks mind politely and considerately. • Does Anger Management! • Picks battles carefully. • A team lead must discipline people who blow commitments or don't show up, but at the same time, is pragmatic. You can never know enough How to Organize a CDS Project
People People are the most important thing to organize. If you get that right, everything else works. • Give first priority to getting the people you need. Designing, building and testing come after that. • What skill-sets? How many? • Are theyavailable, committed, …? • Use people's talents as wisely as possible. • Use experience and cover all of the "needs" somehow. It is helpful to be friends. It is essential to be respectful of colleagues. How to Organize a CDS Project
Recruiting • Don't be clique-ish. • Focus on getting committed, available people with the skill-sets you need. • Outsiders whom you don’t know or who may be “different” may be what you need. • Don't haze. • Strive for a cohesive team. • Capitalize on benefits and advantages of both: • Old hands (know-its) • Newbies (learners) How to Organize a CDS Project
Fund Raising • Money is the next most important thing after people. • Fund raising is more about selling yourself and the team than selling the vehicle. • To a potential donor, sell the idea that, “It gives your company presence in our school.” • Everybody on the team needs to sell. • Getting money and free stuff is ESSENTIAL. • You're nowhere without it. • Never mind that "everybody needs to sell, " recruit some people whose forte is selling. • Get a good "money" person to manage the money. • Organize to "get free stuff." Some people are good at it. How to Organize a CDS Project
Continuity • Build on knowledge and experience, year after year. • Every year, know how and why your vehicle is better than the previous one. • Use your alumni. How to Organize a CDS Project
