  1. Technology planning* … is the process of identifying the ideal role of technology in an organization and mapping the evolution of that role into the future. * Summarized from module on Technology planning for non-profits provided by the IBM On Demand Community Web site.

Why have technology planning? • An ongoing process to improve the operational effectiveness • Provides a technology roadmap based on the organizational mission and strategic plan that is used to improve outcome measurement, marketing, ability to meet increases in demand for services, and access to information for better decision making. • Requires commitment from the executive director and board. • Tool used when pursuing funding opportunities. • With clearly stated reasons for improving technological capacity, and complete assessments of current capabilities, it provides the information that funders want to see when assessing a grant request.

Five critical steps: • Form a technology committee • Create a technology vision statement and specific goals (2-3 year horizon) • Assess the organization's technology • permits accurate planning for technology purchases, training and program changes • Develop an evaluation plan • Write the technology plan
