Content Objectives • The student will explore various facets of colonial life in Virginia including hardships, influences by different cultural groups, and economic principles.
Lesson 1: Diary of a Young Colonist • Sol Objective: TSW demonstrate knowledge of the first permanent English settlement in America by describing hardships faced by settlers. • Lesson 1 Without Technology: TSW read information about Jamestown and answer questions about what is read. • Lesson 1 Technology-Infused: TSW read information about Jamestown and compose a one page diary entry on the computer.
Lesson 1:Student Sample Directions: You are a young colonist (male or female). The date is September 3, 1622. Type a one page diary entry below. Make sure to include the date, Dear Diary, and sign your name. When finished, click on File>Print>Ok. Do not save your work. Turn in printout to Mrs. Pilley. September 3, 1622 Dear Diary, Today I woke up early and made brakefast for the men before they went out to cut wood. They eat worse than pigs and forget their manners. I then had to wash and scrub their muddy, filthy clothes. Then I had to fix their lunch and supper. They never say thank you. I also had to take care of the sick people. I did have time to go to evening service. I miss Mother and Father so much. I want to go home to England. Susie Smartypants
