The Rise of Dictators Chapter 28
The Great Depression had led to a loss of faith in democracies. • If the present government can’t do anything to help these countries, who can?
SOVIET UNION • Dictator-Joseph Stalin • Communist • Goal: • Government ownership of land & factories
Stalin’s 5-Year Plan: • Make Soviet Union an industrial power • Costs • 8-13 Million people dead • Totalitarian government
ITALY • Dictator-Benito Mussolini • Fascism • Anti-communist • Intense nationalism • Glorified military (“Black Shirts”) • Failed democracy • Totalitarian state
GERMANY • Dictator-Adolf Hitler (Der Fuhrer) • Nazi (Same as fascist PLUS): • Racism-anti-semitism • Mein Kampf (My Struggle) • The Aryan race • Lebensraum • German living space • One German empire
This appealed to: • Businesses and churches • World War I veterans • Working class • Nationalists
1932-Hitler was elected Chancellor of the Weimar Republic • Once in office, he destroyed the Republic & established the Third Reich
JAPAN • Emperor Hirohito & Hideki Tojo • Nationalist group led by military leaders • Asia for Asians • Reality-Japanese Empire • Japanese target-China
Japan invades Manchuria • Violated LON, Washington Naval Conference, and Open Door Policy • LON condemns Japanese actions • Japan doesn’t care what LON condemns • So, who will do something about it?
US Stimson Doctrine says that land seized by force won’t be recognized • Japan says “so what” and quits the LON, ignoring the US • What message are democracies sending the bad guys?
Basically, that they can do what they want and no one will do anything about it. • No one wants a war.
