  2. Connotation and Denotation Denotation is the dictionary definition of a word.  *You can remember this because Denotation and 
 Dictionary start with a D. Words can have similar definitions, but different 
connotations. The connotation of a word is the emotion associated 
with the word.

  3. The volunteers were supervised by Margaret. The volunteers were bossed by Margaret. Which sentence gives a sense that Margaret's 
actions have a negative effect on the volunteers? The feelings and associations a word has, in 
addition to its dictionary meaning, is called 
connotation. bossed has a negative connotation
