Denotation • the literal dictionary definition of a word. • Has a neutral, objective tone. • For example: • the name ‘Hollywood’ denotes an area of Los Angeles, worldwide known as the center of the American movie industry.
Loaded Words • Words with strong, emotional connotations. • For example: • “Lose the slouchy sweats…put on a sassy skirt” • Venus commercial
