What is Sports Medicine? • Sports medicine is the study and practice of medical principles related to the science of sports. Sports medicine is a specialization that mixes both the fitness and medical fields. Sports medicine is an area of the fitness industry that is becoming more popular as the needs arise. With injury occurring more frequently in sports, the benefits of sports medicine are becoming more widely recognized.

How does Sports Medicine connect with Sports Science? • Sports science, also referred to as exercise science, is a focused study and application of the principals of physiology, anatomy, and psychology as they relate to human movement and physical activity. Exercise science is still quite young, and much of the field is focused on conducting research on the various adaptations to exercise or the lack of exercise, of the human body. This work ranges from the elite athlete to the general population; children to elderly; and the physical components of fitness to the psychological. Sports medicine combines medical principles with sports science in an attempt to prevent injury and promote rehabilitation.

Methods … • Sports medicine uses methods such as: • Active-Release Technique- (ART) is most commonly used to treat conditions related to adhesions or scar tissue in overused muscles. • Self-Myofascial Release- a form of soft tissue therapy used to treat somatic dysfunction and resulting pain and restriction of motion. These two stretching techniques may be used in rehabilitation and prehabilitation of injury.
Where Sports Medicine is used … • Now the practice of sports medicine involves a comprehensive team of health care professionals who are trained in a variety of backgrounds, including the likes of: • Athletic training- the course of practice and exercise and diet undertaken by an athlete. • Biomechanics- The study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms. • Exercise physiology- Exercise physiology is the study of the acute and chronic adaptions in response to a wide-range of physical exercise conditions. • Physical therapy- The treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery. • Nursing- The profession or practice of providing care for the sick and infirm. • Sport psychology- an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from the fields of kinesiology and psychology. • Nutrition- (also called nourishment or aliment) is the provision, to cells and organisms, of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life.
