  1. Tutorial for starting with a Ning site created as a virtual space for RLLP team

  2. We’ve created a virtual space for RLLP team to socialise and collaborate on our project (a bit like MySpace but just for us). This set of instructions takes you through the basics of how to join and start taking part...

  3. When you click on the link in the email or here, it will take you to a page like this... You may need to enable your cookies following the provided link to Ning help centre Fill the details and click ‘Sign Up’

  4. You’ll then be asked to create a profile by completing the form as shown in this example Browse for a picture you’d like to use for your online identity

  5. That’s it! You’re in! The Latest Activity will show that you’ve just joined the network

  6. The Welcome message gives some suggested first steps to taking part...

  7. ...as does the grey box in the top, middle of your screen. When you’re feeling more at home, you can get rid of the green box by clicking here...

  8. ...and current discussions in the Forum. Please do contribute to any of them. All are open only to those who, like you, have been invited to join by email, not to the wider public.

  9. If you want to, you can Start a Discussion of your own. Similarly if you’d like to share an interesting video, you can post it here. A tutorial demo about how to download a video is on the left-hand side of the site.

  10. ...and a synchronous chat window that allows you to chat with anyone whose online at the same time as you. There’s a clickable preview of a selection of network members that will take you to their individual profiles...

  11. Sorry about the ads. We’re stuck with them for now. Just ignore ‘em

  12. The tabs along the top are worth exploring, especially ‘My Page...’

  13. You can see your page by going to ‘My Page’ tab. This is my page as an example 

  14. ...and people can add comments to your comment wall

  15. You can control who sees and can comment on your page, as well as changing the colour scheme by clicking on My Settings

  16. ...and this dropdown option lets you add items to your page and to share it with others...

  17. The Blog Post option is really useful if you want to keep a research or reflective diary. ..

  18. Like this... ...clicking on More Options....

  19. ...gives you a bigger text editing window and some additional formatting options

  20. ..and if, when you’re on this page you scroll down, you’ll find that you can ‘tag’ each of your posts with keywords about the content so that you can do keyword searches later, great if you want to retrieve a post you created months ago. A blog can be used to capture reflections, but also to keep a log of useful and interesting reading or resources. You can select release dates and privacy options for each new post that you create.

  21. So that’s a quick tour of the basics. You’ll find there are lots of other features for you to explore. You can look at the Demo videos and uploaded videos in the ‘Videos’ tab for more help. Wherever you are in the system, if you scroll down, on the right you’ll find a link to my profile. I’ve set up the network so if you have any ideas or suggestions, click on my profile and put a comment on my comment wall.

  22. … or you can send a private message

  23. Remember, this RLLP virtual office is OUR space. It belongs to all of you and with with an enthusiastic approach it will become a fabulous resource This is a great way for us to collaborate. Have fun being part of it : )
