    5. What Are Environmental Strategies? Incorporate prevention efforts aimed at changing or influencing: Community Conditions Standards Institutions Structures Systems Policies

    6. What Are Environmental Strategies? Comprehensive, multi-strategy effort in place to achieve population level change by focusing on multiple targets of sufficient scale and scope to make a difference communitywide.

    7. Environmental Strategies Lead to long-term outcomes. Examples Moving Tobacco products behind the counter. Supporting businesses to go tobacco free. Changing Policy to limit tobacco use.

    8. Environmental Strategies Require substantial commitment from various sectors of the community to sustain community change.

    9. Environmental Strategies Environmental strategies focus on populations and affect large numbers of people through the adoption of systems and policy change and ongoing effective enforcement.

    10. Logic Model Approach Problem Too many Youth are using tobacco. Long Term Goal Decrease in 30 day use rates. Increase in the average age of onset. Increase in parents talking to their children about ATOD use. Increase in perception of risk of harm. Increase in parental disapproval rates.

    11. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Valley Smoke Free Dining Guide Developed with the use of students from JMU. Printed 500 in second printing, needs to be updated. Need funds for printing or business to donate printing.

    12. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Table Tents in restaurants and businesses Available on our website, can customize to fit your community. Need to change frequently and be open to whatever the business wants.

    13. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Tray Liners Not used as widely in restaurants as we anticipated. Used one day on in-patient trays at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. We are checking into one day with McDonalds.

    14. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Safe Kids on the Move Display Board Businesses must be willing to participate. Boards must be changed regularly, we guarantee monthly. Reaches different people than we normally can reach.

    15. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Mission Driven Coupon Book Multiple businesses are contacted and educated about the work of the coalition. Used as a fund raiser for partner organizations. Gets local data out to adults in the community. Is evolving and growing.

    18. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal TV Commercials – Written by the Harrisonburg Rockingham Youth Council and focus on alcohol.

    19. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal January 1, 2008 – Rockingham Memorial Hospital goes Tobacco Free Radical policy change that effects all persons who enter the hospital, patients, employees, family members and other guests. Challenges that were not anticipated were met because of buy in by hospital administration.

    20. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Community Fairs and Events Rockingham County Fair – over 17,000 in attendance. Children First Fair – over 3,500 in attendance. International Festival – over 6,500 in attendance. Teen Health Fair – 2 high schools each year targeting ninth grade.

    21. Environmental Strategies implemented to reach our Goal Conversations with one Harrisonburg City Council Member very interested in the General Assembly allowing localities more flexibility in restricting tobacco use. This is not yet incorporated into our overall strategic plan but is very in keeping with environmental strategies.

    22. Are Our Efforts Comprehensive? They are a start and an effort to reach persons in multiple ways that we don’t normally reach. We hope to learn a lot from others and build a stronger and more comprehensive environmental strategy as we move forward.

Funding Environmental Strategies Drug Free Communities Support Program Staff salaries Printing of coupon book Coupon book is a fund raiser Low cost printing, table tents Local Foundation funds – hospitals, community groups, United Way Check with grant funders about small amounts to pay for printing, etc. Students to do leg work

    24. Programs currently funded by the VTSF Toward No Tobacco – taught to all 7th graders in Rockingham and Augusta Counties, almost 1700 youth. Year 2 includes a 2 day booster with all 8th graders.
