  2. What is Yom HaZikaron - Israeli Memorial Day? Yom HaZikaron, the National Memorial Day for Israeli soldiers that were slain in battle, is a central element of the national commemoration of the fallen. The day is an expression of the state's deep moral debt owed to those that gave their lives in the defense of and/or honoring her very existence. It honors the memory of fallen IDF soldiers, and also those that were part of the pre-state underground, members of security forces, and victims of terror. Yom HaZikaronfalls on the fourth day of the month of Iyar (from sunset to nightfall, as per the Jewish calendar), one day before Independence Day.   3. What is Yom HaZikaron - Israeli Memorial Day? On Yom HaZikaronflags fly at half-mast and memorial ceremonies - both state- sponsored and private - take place all throughout the country. Media outlets direct their broadcast toward issues of collective bereavement and places of entertainment freeze all activities. In the evening, at the start of the holiday, there is a government ceremony at the Kotel (The Western Wall) while the day following sees most of the ceremonies take place in military cemeteries throughout the county. During the War of Attrition, a low profile war which claimed the lives of many Israeli soldiers from 1967 through 1970, Ehud Manor’s younger brother Yehudah was killed in a battle on the Egyptian border.   8. The Female Soldier: The Story of Keren Tendler Since the time of the pre-state underground defense movement, women have served- and fallen- in defense of the nation of Israel. Throughout the history of the state women have served in diverse units of the IDF and have proven essential to the country's security. Sgt. Maj. KerenTendlerwas the first female helicopter flight mechanic in the IDF and was the first female Israeli soldier to die on active duty since the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Tendler was killed during the second Lebanon on August 12th, 2006. She and four other crew members died when their helicopter was shot down after deploying troops. Like all the soldiers that came before them, those who fought in the Yom Kippur War hoped that their war would be the final one and that peace could be achieved. The people singing the song are only 18 years old; the children of the 1973 War. Eighteen years later, though their parents hoped for peace, these children are suiting up and marching out to defend their homeland. This song expresses the feelings of those 18 year-olds. The nation of Israel will remember and be blessed by, and mourn the lost splendor of its youth, and their admirable courage, indomitable will and self sacrifice which was destroyed in the difficult and ongoing struggle.
