  1. Safety PrecautionsBetter Safe Than Sorry!

  2. Introduction: Knowing and practicing safety precautions will avoid accidents in the school and salon. Safety precautions will also prevent causing damage to client’s hair, nails, skin and clothing. Safety precautions can prevent the spread of germs or contagious diseases. The Texas Cosmetology Commission recognizes the need to practice safety and sanitation procedures.

  3. Objectives: • Understanding the proper use of scissors, razors clippers and trimmers safely. • Using the blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron safely. • Mixing chemicals safely. • The importance of clean hands, sanitized implements and work area.

  4. Cutting tools, such as, scissors, razors and clippers should be handled with caution. Reckless use of these tools can seriously injure the operator and/or the client.

  5. Safely using hot tools can avoid serious damage to client’s hair. • Some of these tools can get close to 300 degrees, So please, operate with care!

  6. More accidents and messes happen when mixing chemicals. • Avoid being sloppy or careless when working with products containing strong chemicals like: ammonia or sodium hydroxide.

  7. Seriously Folks • Note: • Always wear protective gloves and smock. • Always drape client properly. Give the client a towel to protect his or her eyes. • If chemicals do get into eyes-rinse immediately. Seek medical attention if needed.

  8. The Texas Cosmetology Commission sets mandatory rules for safety precautions. • Also, remember the Golden Rule, “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Done Unto You”. • You wouldn’t want someone using a comb on you they had used on ten other people, would you?

  9. Conclusion: Always keep in mind of why we want to make our school a safe place to work. Remember we are forming important life and work skills now. So, lets form good habits that will stay with us throughout our career.
