Solving a Linear Inequality • Get the variable alone just like we have been doing. • One new rule: • If you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must flip the inequality symbol. > becomes < < becomes >
Solve the inequality (same as before) 3x ≥ 15 3 3 x ≥ 5
Solve the Inequality(new rule) Sign flipped because I divided by a negative number!! -4x < 16 -4 -4 x > -4 -10x ≥ -50 -10 -10 x ≤ 5 Sign flipped because I divided by a negative number!!
Examples Solve each linear inequality: • 6x ≤ -12 • -3x > 12 • 4x < -20 x ≤ -2 x < -4 x < -5 x ≤ -64
Solve 15p < 60. A.p< 4 B.p< 45 C.p< 75 D.p> 4
Solve –4z > 64. A.z< 16 B.z< –16 C.z> –16 D.z> 16
A. B. C.x < –30 D.x > –30
