Education and Training News Brief! • $15 billion effort to combat AIDS in Africa & other areas – PEPFAR • President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief • Bush wants to double spending • House Democrats want to triple spending • Currently treating 1.4 million people in sub-Saharan Africa • Slash millions in spending on sexual abstinence education • Conservative groups angry

Education and Training News Brief Cont’d… • Bush’s new plan calls for $30 billion over next 5 years • Democrat’s new plan calls for $50 billion over next 5 years • Want to remove a stipulation that says 1/3 of the money has to go to abstinence only education • ARVs – 155,000 people in 15 sub-Saharan countries receiving ARVs in 2004 • Now 1.4 million as of September 2007 • Additional $30 billion will extend treatment to 2.5 million people and prevent 12 million new infections • http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1709622,00.html
