Warm-Up • Every day a warm-up will be on the board for you to complete. Start working on it as soon as you come into class. • Describe an obstacle you overcame over the weekend. What happened? How did you overcome that obstacle?
Vocabulary Week #1 1) Untenanted (adj.): Not leased to or occupied by a tenant. (An unoccupied apartment). 2) Invalid (n): Patient, sick person. 3) Infallibility (n): The inability to be wrong. 4) Unfurled (adj.) : Become spread out from a rolled state. 5) Blighted (adj) : Spoiled, harmed or destroyed. 6) Doggedness (n): Persistent determination.
Vocabulary Week 1 7) Poised (adj): Having a self-assured manner. 8) Precariously (adv): Dangerously lacking in security. 9) Gilded (adj): Covered thinly with gold leaf. 10) Evanesce (v): Pass out of sight, memory or existence.
Nouns • Person, place, thing, idea, or quality. • Person: girl, astronaut, boyfriend, 2Pac. • Place: Valencia High, Hogwarts, New York, countryside. • Thing: iPad, spider, mall, salad. • Idea: democracy, truth, illusion, fantasy. • Quality: beauty, caring, hatred, boredom.
Nouns • Get out a sheet of paper • Fold it in half and write nouns in the center • On the left side, write as many concrete nouns as you can that you see in the classroom. • On the right side, write as many abstract nouns that you feel or see within the classroom.
Poetry and Challenges • Read the poem to yourself silently, noting any important ideas within the poem about challenges or obstacles. • Read- aloud • In groups, answer the questions provided.
Poetry Writing • Write your own poem about an everyday obstacle your face or a specific challenge you have overcome in your life! • Any form is acceptable. • Be as creative as you’d like.
