Sumerians • Developed the world’s first civilization. • 3000 B.C. Sumerians settled in southern Mesopotamia.
Sumerian’s Cont…. • Most Sumerian’s lived in a city-state: a city state with a countryside all around it.
Sumerian’s (still) • Kish was the city-state known as the most powerful city in Samaria. • Uruk and Ur continually fought for dominance. This led us to the story of Gilgamesh.
Akkadians • Settled in northern Mesopotamia. • The Akkadians and Sumerians had peace for many years until Sargon (Akkadian leader) wanted to make the Akkadian empire much larger. • Sargon was the first ruler to have a permanent army.
Sargon • Established the worlds first empire. • Sargons huge empire stretched from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea.
Religion Shaped Society • Sumerian’s believed in a polytheistic society: many gods. • Enlil-lord of the air • Enki-god of wisdom • Inanna-goddess of love and war • Utu-sun god • Nanna-moon god.
Social Status/Hierachry • King-highest (chosen by gods to rule) • Priest-2nd • Sumers skilled people: traders, craftsmen, and merchants. • Farmers and laborers • slaves
Men/Women's roles • Men: held political power and made laws. Education was usually reserved for men. • Women stayed at home and took care of the children. • Enheduanna: daughter of Sargon is considered the first known female writer in history.
