Spelling and Spelling Tic Tac Toe Each week, our spelling words assist the first graders in solidifying the phonics sound for the week. Spelling pretests are given on Mondays. Spelling post-tests are given on Fridays. Spelling Tic Tac Toe is available for your child to have choice in how they practice their spelling words throughout the week. This will be sent home each week and can also be found on our class website.
Reading Logs The first graders are expected to read for 20 minutes a night (yup, including weekends). Reading each night helps the students in using the reading comprehension and fluency skills learned in school.
Phonics Phonics is the system of relationships between letters and sounds. Knowing the sounds of letters and letter combinations will help your child decode words as he reads. Knowing phonics will also help your child know which letters to use as he writes words.
Word Work Word Work is learning how words work, and learning how they are connected to each other. We no longer learn a single word, but rather, we learn a "pattern" or “chunk” within a word.
Fluency Fluency is learning to read in a way that sounds like your regular speaking voice. In first grade, we will learn about all of the things fluent readers do as we apply these skills to our own reading.
Reading Comprehension Reading comprehension consists of remembering and knowing what was read. Retelling a story, analyzing a story, and answering questions about a story are all part of reading comprehension.
Grammar Grammar consists of speaking and writing in a manner that is correct. The grammar curriculum for first grade consists of sentence word order, correct punctuation, parts of speech, and syllables.
Writing Writing is very important in early literacy as it gives children an opportunity to put all of their literacy education together in one place. Writing incorporates word work, comprehension, and grammar. By the end of first grade, the children will be expected to write a paragraph (at least three sentences) on one topic.
Homework • Homework will be given at least 3 times a week. • Homework is to be returned the next day unless otherwise stated. • Missing homework will be handled on a “3 strikes your out” basis. • Students will be given 3 strikes each unit in math, on their 3rd strike students will spend free time sitting out completing their missing work
Building a Strong Math Foundation • Think of math as a table, if even one of the legs is wobbly eventually the table will crash down as more things are added to the top. • Even the slightest misunderstanding at a young age can cause bigger problems as a student continues in math
Practice (or Repetition) Makes Perfect • Throughout the year many of the topics that are covered are revisited several times throughout the year • Revisiting concepts allows students many opportunities to explore any weaker areas they may have and improve upon them.
Curriculum Overview • Representing and solving addition and subtraction up to 20 • Count, read, write and represent numbers up to 120 starting at any number • Comparing two numbers up to 99 • Create, divide, distinguish among shapes • Tell and write time in hours and half-hours • Order, compare, and measure object lengths by non-standard units
