What is Title I? Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools. The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child. Its purpose is to address the academic needs of students and to assist them in meeting their state’s academic standards. The program serves millions of children in public elementary and secondary schools each year including eligible students in private schools.
How Title I Works The federal government provides funding to states each year for the Title I program. The Florida Department of Education sends the money to our district, Pinellas County Schools. The school district identifies eligible schools and distributes the Title I funds to the school. Westgate Elementary implements a school-wide program, all students benefit from the supplemental services provided by Title I. Every parent is a Title I parent.
Listed below are some of the ways that Title I funds can be used to provide support for programs at the school Additional teachers and paraprofessionals Additional training for school staff Extra time for instruction (Before and/or after school programs) Smaller classes Parental Involvement Activities A variety of supplemental teaching materials and/or equipment
Title I Budget • Westgate Elementary is provided $ 229,509.19 to pay for services and programs for our students. The Title I Parent Involvement budget is $4,500.00 • We use our Title I funds to pay for the following: • Teaching Partners • Parent Workshops • Learning Materials for Use at Home • Technology Specialist • Instructional Materials and Equipment • Additional Teachers to Support the Teachers as They Work to Meet Student Needs
Title I Budget Parents can assist in deciding how to use Title I funds…you have the right to be involved. All Title I schools must maintain documentation that demonstrates parent input into their budgets and plans. Every school has a School Advisory Council (SAC) composed of parents, teachers, other staff members, Principal and students (at Middle and High School) Input from the Principal, School Advisory Council, parents, and the school’s staff determines how to allocate or use Title I funds.
Parent’s Right to Know As a Title I parent you have the right to be involved in the development of the following plans and documents for our school: • School Improvement Plan (SIP) • Compact • Parent Involvement Plan (PIP) for the school and district • request and attend meetings to express your opinions and to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of your children, *Please review these documents and attend meetings or complete surveys to share your input…we need and want you to be involved.
Parent’s Right to Know • Be provided information on your child’s level of achievement on assessments in Reading/Language Arts, Writing, Mathematics, and Science • Request and receive information on the qualifications of your child’s teacher and paraprofessionals that are working with your child • Principal’s attestations • Be informed if your child is taught by a non-highly qualified teacher for four or more consecutive weeks.

Educational Standards Florida’s academic content standards establish high expectations for all students. The Florida Standards identify what your child needs to know and be able to do in all content areas. You may read more information by visiting, www.fldoe.org . Also, your child’s teacher will be able to explain the standards for your child’s grade level.

Measuring Student Success You will receive specific information regarding assessment dates later in the year. • State FAIR-SS Assessment for Reading in the Fall and Winter • District Assessments for Math, Science, Writing, and Reading as scheduled by the District • School Based Running Records and other informal on-going assessments

Parent-School Compact Every Title I School has a Compact. It is an agreement between the parent, student, and school to encourage the highest student achievement Please review and sign your child’s Compact, then return it to your child’s teacher.

Parent-School Compact We ask our families to pledge: • Toensure that your child attends school regularly and on time; • To provide a home environment that encourages your child to learn; • To encourage completion of all assignments, and monitor your child's progress;
Parent-School Compact • To communicate regularly with the teacher(s), and attend parent conferences; • To support the school in developing positive behaviors; • To talk with your child about his/her school activities every day; • To encourage your child to read at home and to monitor his/her TV viewing
Parent-School Compact • To volunteer time at the school or provide other assistance for the school; • To show respect and support for your child, the teacher, and the school; • To provide nutritious meals and adequate sleep for your child's good health; • To help your child learn to take responsibility for his/her actions.
Parent-School Compact We ask our students to pledge: • Todo their best in their work and in their behavior, and ask for help when they need it; • To obey the school, class, and bus rules; • To take responsibility for their actions; • • To work cooperatively with their classmates;

Parent Involvement Plan (PIP) Requirements • We involve parents in a meaningful way in the development, implementation, and review of the parental involvement programs. You can join us by participating in either of the following meetings: 2nd Tuesday of the Month • School Advisory Committee (SAC) 6:00 pm Purpose: The purpose of SAC is to support the school’s mission to provide an environment in which learners will continue to succeed through quality teaching. • Parent Teacher Association (PTA) 6:30 pm Mission: To make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
Parent Involvement Plan Requirements • Convene a Title I annual meeting to inform parents about Title I requirements and their rights to be involved in the Title I program. • Offer meetings at flexible times to maximize participation

Title I Parent Station • Our school’s Title I Parent Station is located in the front office and includes: • Title 1 Information Notebook • Parent Involvement Plan • Parent Resources Information • School Improvement Plan • Calendar of Events • Parents’ Right to Know • Compact
Parent Advisory Council (PAC) The District has a Parent Involvement Plan (LEA PIP). The Parent Advisory Council is responsible for reviewing and revising it. PAC meets with the District’s Title I Family Education Specialist. PAC meets twice a year, if you are interested in representing Westgate Elementary at these meetings, please notify Mrs. Johnson-Clark.
Title I Family Library All Title I families may visit the Title I Library located at 2499 25th Street South St. Petersburg, FL A great place to check out books and games… you don’t need a library card and no there are no late fees. Each time your child visits the library they will receive a FREE BOOK! Classroom Visits • Teachers will provide grade specific information on: • Florida state Standards and Grade Level Expectations; • Grade Specific Curriculum; • Measuring Student Success; • Definition of Proficiency; and • Overview of their plans for the year/Expectations
