THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES • Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University, studied the brain for over 20 years. In 1983 he developed a theory of Multiple Intelligences. • He believes that intelligence is a biophysical potential that reaches achievement due to cultural and motivational influences. • Did you say - Huh?
When cultures value certain competencies, the children in that society are given an opportunity to develop those competencies and abilities. • Our society generally VALUES mathematical and science related skills. • Intelligence is multifaceted, otherwise high achievers would perform at high levels all across the board. • Multiple Intelligences is indicated when the same person can find advance subject matter easy in one area and difficult in another – • We all have all 8, but are stronger in some than others.
There are currently eight basic Intelligences • Visual-Spatial (picture smart) • Bodily-Kinesthetic (Body smart) • Verbal-Linguistic (word smart) • Naturalist (nature smart) • Musical-Rhythmic (music smart) • Logical-Mathematical (number/reasoning smart) • Intrapersonal (self smart) • Interpersonal (people smart) • Existential (spiritually smart) #9
