Objectives • Welcome to the Cayuse424 Science module. • In this module you will learn: • Cayuse424 Basic Template Concepts. • How to use Cayuse424 templates using a PC or MAC to: • Create a Research Plan from scratch. • Work with an existing Research Plan. • Create a Biosketch. • Create other miscellaneous documents. • Create all Science documents in PDF suitable for uploading to the proposal and transmitting electronically to the grant agency.
The Challenge • One of the challenges of electronic submissions to Grants.gov is preparing PDFs of your Research Plan and attaching them into the correct sections of the grant proposal. • Cayuse424 provides several Word templates that make this job quick and easy. • If you create your Research Plan using one of the Cayuse424 templates, you will be able to create PDFs and attach them to the appropriate sections in a few simple steps.
How Do Templates Work? • The templates provide bookmarks, along with header and footer commands. • Bookmarks are the mechanism that ensures that each section of the Research Plan is attached to the appropriate section of the proposal when it is uploaded.
Before You Get Started • Before you can use the templates to create your Research Plan, you must ensure that two Cayuse424 tools are downloaded onto your desktop. • Cayuse424 Templates. • Cayuse424 PDF Print Installer. • In many organizations, the download is performed by technical support. • However, you may download your own tools. For details on how to do this, refer to the Desktop Readiness training module.
Cayuse424 Science Templates • Cayuse424 provides four templates: • ResearchPlan1_1:To use when you are starting a Research Plan from scratch. This template inserts “gssectheads” into a blank Word document and then generates bookmarks during the print phase that will allow your Research Plan to be efficiently uploaded into your grant proposal. • ResearchPlanAddIn1_1: To use if you have an existing Research Plan. This template will insert section heads into your existing plan so that you can upload it quickly and easily into your grant proposal. • Biosketch:Provides a template in which to create Biosketches. • BlankContPage: Use to create individual pages such as Abstracts, Narrative, Equipment, Facilities, etc. that can be attached to the grant proposal.
Template Defaults/Tips • Template Defaults are set accordingly to NIH standards: • Default Margins= ½ inch • Default Font = Arial 11 • Template Tips • Do not insert manual page breaks into your Research Plan • Manual page breaks cause unwanted page breaks in the PDF version of the plan, creating additional unwanted pages
Template Usage • In the remaining slides of the Science module you will learn how to use the templates to support development of new and existing research plans. • The procedures for using the Cayuse424 Science templates are described first for PCs and then for MACs because each computer handles the template differently.
